La Mort & l’Extase (Death & Bliss)
Through its baroque language, Death & Bliss, a piece for 10 dancers, 1 singer and 15 amateurs, covers a pictorial dimension: A scenic exhibition of 30 naked characters and actors of a living ecstatic painting.
In a sacred conception, eroticism and death overthrow the edifice of life. Place of transgression of murder ”thou shall not kill” and transgression of sexuality “thou shall touch flesh only in marriage”, Georges Bataille explains that they are the thresholds of prohibition that lead to afterlife. Mortal and sexual anguish lead to the delight of being discontinuous, in eternity. The meeting of death and bliss takes its true roots in religious belief. Cult of pain, object of artistic fascination and worship icons, death in religion is one of the greatest creators of emotion. Paradoxically, religion created the expression of pleasure and sinning – making Death a creative trigger, “out of one’s self”, moving towards poetry.
